Dr. Bridget Ryan

Having worked in the field for over two decades, Dr. Ryan is a highly experienced sleep dentist near Fairview Park. Her years of effort are only natural when you consider she had a natural interest in science from a young age. As that passion led her to dentistry and sleep dentistry, she grew to love helping people solve their rest-related problems. That there’s always more research to learn has also kept her continually interested and motivated.

Dr. Ryan’s journey in sleep dentistry began after she attended Ohio State University and Cleveland State University. At that time, she went on to earn her dental doctorate from Case Western Reserve University’s dental school. Dr. Ryan then pursued and completed a General Practice Residency at St. Luke / St. Vincent Charity Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.

Even now, Dr. Ryan maintains memberships in many dental sleep medicine organizations. Not only is she a qualified dentist with the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, but she’s also a member of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. I'm Interested in Sleep Apnea Treatment

Treating sleep apnea used to rely on loud, complicated CPAP machines. Unfortunately, many patients simply didn’t use them because they were awkward, uncomfortable, or difficult to wear. Conversely, oral appliance treatment is a more comfortable, convenient way to treat sleep apnea. Using a custom-made device that fits securely in your mouth to position the airway open naturally, most patients find this treatment more effective than CPAP because they’re more likely to use it. To learn more about oral appliance therapy and see if you qualify, schedule a consultation with us today.

I'm Struggling With Snoring and Fatigue

While many patients with sleep apnea do snore, just because you snore doesn’t mean you have sleep apnea. The good news is that no matter what the root cause of your snoring is, we can help you treat it. To learn more about snoring treatment and to see if a custom sleep appliance can help you get a more peaceful, restful night’s sleep, contact us today for a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Should I See a Dentist for Sleep Apnea Treatment?

Are you curious why you should see a dentist to treat your sleeping disorder? Although it might seem unusual, the truth is that oral healthcare providers are uniquely trained to address a variety of concerns related to the mouth and upper respiratory system, which is often the root cause of sleep apnea.

For example, obstructive sleep apnea, the most diagnosed type, can result from a jaw misalignment that blocks your airways. In many circumstances, oral appliance therapy is can address the root problem causing your nighttime interruptions to reduce your symptoms.

Does Everyone Who Snores Have Sleep Apnea?

Snoring is a common symptom of sleep apnea, but that doesn’t mean that everyone who snores has this condition, and vice versa. Some people experience snoring due to other factors, such as nasal congestion, alcohol consumption, and sleeping position. That means snoring alone is not sufficient to diagnose this nightly disorder.

Other signs that you might have sleep apnea can include dry throat, morning headaches, mood changes, unintended daytime exhaustion, and restless sleep or frequent waking to urinate.

Can I Diagnose Sleep Apnea on My Own?

If you frequently wake with a headache, suffer from daytime exhaustion, and tend to snore at night, there’s a chance you have developed sleep apnea. But there’s no way to know for sure without an official diagnosis, which, unfortunately, you cannot provide for yourself.

Typically, a sleep study is required to determine whether you have sleep apnea and, if so, the severity of your condition. This is usually done at a special laboratory, though it’s also sometimes possible to complete a take-home sleep test. The results of your study are analyzed by a special sleep physician to provide an official assessment. Once that’s completed, Dr. Ryan can use those findings to help determine an appropriate treatment plan to meet your unique needs.

How Long Are Sleep Apnea Events/Episodes?

Sleep apnea occurs when a person experiences a certain number of events, or episodes, per hour that interrupt their breathing at night. These instances must last at least 10 seconds each to be diagnosed with this condition, though they can sometimes reach up to one or two minutes in more severe cases.

Those with mild cases experience 5 to 14.9 episodes per hour, moderate sleep apnea results in 15 to 30 episodes per hour, and those with severe conditions have more than 30 episodes per hour.
